Slice of Life #2

I’ve been so busy this last month that I swear I took a single deep breath and the entirety of June blitzed past. At certain points, I was so eye-wateringly busy that just cleaning the cat boxes constituted a break. So, what exactly was devouring all my time this month?

Rewrites.

Due to a strange set of circumstances, an old romantasy project of mine ended up getting yanked out of its coffin and resurrected by sheer force of will. Given it’s the first novel I ever wrote, it’s…basically a grubby-faced toddler in a tiara on the verge of a nap-time meltdown. In other words, it needs some TLC before anyone thinks it’s cute again.

Thankfully, the bones of the story are solid (i.e., plot, character, worldbuilding), but rewriting each scene is vastly improving the humor, tension, and pacing. I came across some writing advice that stuck with me and has proven true: when revising, just rewrite the whole scene instead of trying to pick at / salvage the original version. Doing so is ultimately faster and less stressful.

On top of the rewrites, I also was ghostwriting law articles and overhauling my website. A pitch page for my romantasy novel is now live: The Last Goddess. I’ve also redone the home page to better capture the types of novels I write: remixed timelines (a subgenre that I call “time capsule” stories) set within otherworldly societies and led by strongheaded yet flawed characters.

In other news, I won a Goodreads giveaway for The Merge by Grace Walker.

The cover is gorgeous, and the concept — merging two consciousnesses into one body — sounds utterly fascinating. Can’t wait to read this one.

Until next time, friends!
